Circus Girl Records
~ A division of Stephen Shepherd Creative ~
Singer / Songwriter, Stephen Shepherd, is the owner and founder of Circus Girl Records which was founded in 2004. Inspired by his mother, a piano teacher, and his father, a country music fan, Shepherd listened to both country and classical music while growing up in Michigan. Shepherd often uses original flat-picking and finger picking styles that blend folk with country rhythms to form a matrix sound on some of his 50 original songs performed in concert. Up-beat country crowd-pleasing songs include “In The Shade,” “Saturday Morning TV,” “Lazy Rascals,” “Ten Tall Women,” “Gentle Guitar Pickin,” and “Road Cowboy,” while softer country-folk offerings like “Eaten By The Rich,” “Tuesday Come Monday,” “Daylight On The Rise” and “Crystal Kingdoms” embrace a quieter introspective edge.
A recent review calls his music -
“Pure MAGIC! … Worthy of intense study and airplay.”
– Country Western Corner Magazine
“With his writing ability, Stephen Shepherd could write that next big hit!” - “A writer of scorching country songs.”
– Midwest Country News Alpha/Omega CD Review
Based in folk/country roots, Stephen Shepherd’s songwriting contains poignant lyrics that discuss his relationship with a myriad of characters. Described as “lyric-based folk-country with small town realism,” his songs have been likened to Jimmy Buffet, Bob Dylan, and Gordon Lightfoot. His well-crafted lyrics discuss a landscape of characters, ranging from an aging--yet still touring-- guitar picker to Henry Ford symbolically riding shotgun in a teenager’s hopped up Mustang.
Shepherd has been performing music professionally for thirty years in clubs, coffeehouses, college concerts, and festivals, and his first published song appeared in 1975. He now writes and publishes music for Circus Girl Records, is on the Iowa Arts Council’s roster of preferred artists, was a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammy’s), and holds a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing.
